Day 23: Alaska to Mexico Marathon Rally Adventure
Day 23: Alaska to Mexico Rally 2023 - A Rally Surprise - More Sleep and Unplanned Cancellations
The world of endurance rallying is full of surprises. Today, we experienced one that allowed us to savor an unexpected gift - a few extra minutes in bed. The Organizers were forced to cancel the second Regularity due to circumstances beyond their control. So, with a bit of rescheduling, everyone in the rally got a little more shut-eye. A perfect start to another memorable day on the Alaska to Mexico Rally.
Our drive to the first Regularity took us alongside Mormon Lake, the largest in Arizona, and through Coconino Forest. It felt like we had been transported back to the woodlands of British Columbia, except it was 15°C warmer, and thankfully, there was no smoky haze hanging in the air. Dr. John Llewellyn and Jim Smith were waiting with their clocks at the start of this section along the aptly named Fire Control Road. They passed the time between cars by examining the many and varied miniature cacti, a sign of the larger, iconic cacti that would soon make their appearance.
With the Cactus Butte Regularity canceled and no clock ticking away, we had the golden opportunity to immerse ourselves in the stunning scenery. Towering succulents clung to the rocky slopes, a clear sign that we were entering the hotter phase of the rally.
Lunch was set in the charming city of Globe, a place steeped in history. Established in the 1870s, it once thrived as a copper mining hub. The town's heart is filled with beautifully preserved old buildings, including the railway station that hosted our buffet lunch. A dedicated group of volunteers is tirelessly working on the building's restoration, and some of its upper floors have even served as settings for various period film productions.
Unfortunately, the day had its share of setbacks. Stan Gold and Brant Parsons' Porsche had to retire after lunch due to a suspected hole in a piston. We're crossing our fingers, hoping they can rejoin the rally for the final evening in Cabo.
Our journey continued as we made our way into Tucson, with the anticipation of a well-deserved rest day on the horizon. Today was a day of celebrations as well - we marked Manuel Dubs's birthday and his and Irene's 25th wedding anniversary. The Swiss sure know how to throw a party, and we're grateful for their generosity. Amidst these festivities, there were also bittersweet farewells and equally enthusiastic hellos as some crews made changes for the last leg of the rally into Mexico.
The Alaska to Mexico Rally continues to surprise, challenge, and delight, making each day a unique chapter in our epic adventure. Stay tuned for more tales from our incredible journey.
