Day 24: Alaska to Mexico Marathon Rally Adventure

Day 24: Alaska to Mexico Rally 2023 - Rest Day Delights in Tucson

Rest days on the Alaska to Mexico Rally are like a soothing oasis in the midst of our adrenaline-pumping adventure. Today, we found ourselves at the Hacienda Del Sol hotel, a superb rest day accommodation nestled between the vibrant city of Tucson on one side and the awe-inspiring foothills of Mount Lemmon on the other. The backdrop of this serene haven is a mesmerizing array of cacti, their towering forms seemingly keeping watch over our beloved rally cars.

For some, the day began early, as they ventured out to explore Tucson and its surroundings before the desert sun turned up the heat. Others chose to linger a bit longer, savoring the flavors of a superb buffet breakfast that the Hacienda Del Sol had to offer. By mid-morning, our car park resembled a bustling workshop, with drivers, navigators, and the invaluable sweep crews busy with matters of adjustment, lubrication, and maintenance.

The all-American Cadillac of Jim Gately, who has rejoined the rally for the final leg through Mexico, was getting a bit of tender loving care in the form of a new set of wheel bearings. Tony Brooks, his ever-helpful navigator, stood by, passing the necessary tools and advice. Meanwhile, Philip Blunden's Holden required some attention to its handbrake cable. John Pyle, a hands-on enthusiast, joined the experts, checking and finessing his Chevrolet's steering and suspension after its spirited off-road excursion a few days ago.

A few sporadic spots of midday rain, the first we've seen in a while, were no match for our unyielding rally spirit. In fact, they provided a good opportunity for some of us to duck indoors and get online for any last-minute visa applications, as we're set to cross the border into Mexico tomorrow.

For the rest of the day, we were free to explore Tucson and its surroundings. Some of us couldn't resist the lure of the famous fleshy succulents and paid a visit to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a place where the beauty of the desert's flora and fauna comes to life.

As we prepare for the adventures that await us in Mexico, with two Tests on the horizon, we're filled with excitement and anticipation. The United Mexican States, one of the world's cradles of civilization, beckons us with the promise of more unforgettable experiences.

The Alaska to Mexico Rally continues to be a remarkable journey of endurance and camaraderie. Stay with us as we venture into new territory, crossing borders and creating lasting memories.
