Day 8: Alaska to Mexico Marathon Rally Adventure

Day 8: Alaska to Mexico Rally 2023 - Smokey Skies and Autumn Vibes"

The day began with a stark reminder of the wildfires still smoldering in the region. Heavy overnight rain had managed to dampen the flames, but a thick smog hung in the air as we assembled in the car park. The sky, though promising to be blue, had a hazy tinge, and the temperature sat at a chilly 4°C. Today, we were especially grateful for the 48-hour car, led by the indomitable Dick Appleton and Paul Heal. The authorities had declared the long Time Control section out-of-bounds due to the ongoing battle with the wildfires. However, Dick and Paul had our backs, arranging an alternative route that promised its own brand of excitement.

Before we left the Pomeroy Suites, we heard the familiar sound of Andrew McAlpine's Range Rover stubbornly refusing to start. He's waiting for a new rotor arm and has reconciled himself to "trouble getting the old girl going" until the replacement arrives.

As we set off, we were greeted by thick, almost freezing fog enveloping the highway for more than 50 kilometers – a true peasouper. The first regularity, aptly named Peace River, took us along the Sanataa Road. Miraculously, the fog lifted, revealing a delightful stretch of dust-free gravel, flanked by spectacular autumnal trees. Unfortunately, a traffic accident involving a local bus blocked the main road exit from the Regularity, leading to a short delay. Eventually, we reached the Time Control at the Riverside Restaurant in Chetwynd for a much-needed coffee break. From there, we embarked on another leg of our journey, making our way to the lunch Time Control at Tse’Khene Food and Fuel.

The second regularity at Tof Pric added its own unique flavor to the day. We soon found ourselves in Prince George, our night halt. The rally continues, and I can't help but admire the resilience of our fellow participants and their remarkable vehicles.
