Day 25: Alaska to Mexico Rally 2023 - Roaring Engines, Border Crossings, and Desert Adventures

Today was an early start as the sun was just beginning to cast its warm rays over Tucson, Arizona, and we had a border to cross – the US-Mexico border. But this wasn't just a leisurely drive to the border. There were exciting challenges ahead, and we were all ready to embrace them.

First up, we had two tests along the way. The Musselman Honda Circuit was our first stop, where we revved our engines and took on the challenge of two tight laps on a high-quality kart track. It was a fantastic way to warm up our tires and start the day with some adrenaline.

Next, we were in for a treat. We ventured to the NASCAR Tucson Speedway, where we got a taste of US motorsport. The roar of the engines, the thrill of the oval, and the cheering from the crowd (albeit our fellow rally participants) made it a memorable experience. Our versatile sweep team, led by Owen Turner, even provided us with a witty running commentary from the box as we raced around the oval. It was a dose of authentic American motorsport right in the middle of our epic journey.

Leaving the high-speed world of racing behind, we hit the road again and made our way to Ko Vaya, a tiny settlement that had a population of just 46 in 2010. Our rally presence must have given it a bit of a population boost, although we didn't linger around long enough to be officially counted.

The day continued with our journey towards the US-Mexico border through the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Border formalities were swiftly completed, and as the ink dried on the visa stamps in our passports, we knew we were inching closer to Mexico.

The drive through the Gran Desierto de Altar led us to our destination, Puerto Peñasco, tucked away at the northern end of the Sea of Cortez. This vibrant holiday town felt like the perfect place for us to unwind after nearly four weeks on the road. A lavish dinner on the beach served as the perfect appetizer for the last few days of our incredible journey.

The finish line is within sight, and the excitement is palpable. As we gear up for the final stretch, the camaraderie among the crews grows stronger, and the memories of this unforgettable adventure continue to pile up.
